Jezebel

630 9th Avenue

New York, NY 10036-3708

One of the more exquisite restaurants in New York City, Jezebel is well renowned for its eclectic furniture, Victorian lampshades and breathtaking delicacies. Located amongst trendy nightclubs and upscale apartments, Jezebel is located just steps from Midtown West’s Theatre District, and it is only a few blocks from Times Square.

The owner and founder, Alberta Wright, is a former antiques dealer who brought here trendy sense for aged-materials to the design of her restaurant, which is filled with oriental rugs, whicker chairs and classic posters. In 1983, she decided to apply her sense of style to a restaurant centered around southern-fried chicken, and almost 25 years later the restaurant is the beacon of success.

The southern-style restaurant cooks up one heck of a menu, and the food is well complimented its exquisite service. While the portions have shrunk over the past quarter of a century, the main courses are amazing. The Rib-bits, smothered garlic shrimp and the finger-licking fried chicken are all succulent dishes that can meet the standards of even the most sensitive of taste buds. Jezebel’s corn bread is moist and savory, and it crumbles in your mouth, not in your hand. The Roasted Cornish Hen is hardy and sweet at the same time and is definitely worth taste. And their curried goat offers up some Caribbean flavor to the menu.

The prices are a bit expensive, but as we all know, in New York City, there is a premium on quality, and you certainly get quality when eating at Jezebel. If you plan on paying with plastic, do not leave home without that American Express Card. Appetizers run from $7-$12, and the entrees average around $22 per plate. The price is tempered by the frequent live music and environment of good wholesome people and attentive service.

Dinner is served to accommodate theatre goers who are attending showings in the nearby Theater District. Because of that, reservations are recommended due to the people flooding the doors at 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock in order to meet their 7:30 and 10 o’clock theater times. And do not worry about cutting it close. Jezebel goes out of their way to provide preferential and timely service for those in a rush to get to the theater on time. (Reservations are not needed after 10pm or thereabout.)

The late-night special is everyone’s favorite, chicken & waffles. Young black residents of New York City come from every borough to drown chicken and waffles in maple syrup and have a good time with friends as they end their nights. Restaurant closes at 11:30 on weekend nights, so hurry on through and come join in on the tradition and stop by Jezebel for good food, good times and good people.
