Hopefully, the snow will stop beating down on Manhattan and allow us to get this Valentine’s Weekend started early tonight. You know the rush to the bars and clubs will be at full board tonight after a Wednesday that was pretty much a wash due to the blizzard. Here are just a few of the things going on afterwork, this evening and tonight in New York City. Keep checking our twitter feed for more information on tonight’s and this weekend’s nightlife agenda.
Anti Valentine’s Day Party
Powerhouse Arena (37 Main Street, Brooklyn): For those of you in protest of Valentine’s Day, there is an event for you. Poetry readings at the Powerhouse Arena is Brooklyn will blow your mind tonight, as Jerry Williams, Donna Masini and others break out some of their best writings on love, breaking up and the like only a few nights before V-Day arrives. New York Magazine has already voted this event one of the Top Ten Valentine’s Day parties of 2010. So if you feel like bashing on this greeting card holiday, head out to the Powerhouse Arena and do with others just like you.
High Life Thursdays
Taj (48 W. 21st Street): As if Taj didn’t already have enough going on, now you can add the “High Life” to its list of events. Every Thursday (except for the last Thursday of the month) you can expect one of the flyest afterwork parties in New York City going down at Taj. The music will include everything from hip-hop and R&B to Reggae and Reggaeton with DJ Jon Quick running the 1’s and 2’s. There is no cover if you arrive before 8pm, and they are even serving food! So check it out if you have the time, and start your weekend early at High Life Thursdays.
Tempted 2 Touch Thursdays
Touch NYC (240 W. 52nd Street): Touch is firing up the 1’s and 2’s with a couple of surprise guest DJs this Thursday, and their promising to spin the best of the Top 40 and Hip-Hop mashups you’ve ever heard in a New York City night club. From the looks of it, there aren’t any drink specials, and there is definitely a cover for the fellas, but I will be honest, given the high level of promotion for this event, Touch is going to be off the chain tonight, so I wouldn’t recommend dismissing it on the basis of price alone. Doors open at 10pm.
Selfish Thursdays
Suzie Wongs (547 W. 27th Street): Suzie Wongs is doing its best to get you come out tonight and enjoy the Hip-hop and R&B classics with them all night long. From 11pm to 4am, you can get your groove on at Suzie Wongs and it won’t cost you a thing as long as you get there before midnight. Trust me; this is one of the sexier parties of the evening, as promoters Jinglin’ Baby and Suave are just two of brain children behind this exclusive event. And if you do decide on Suzie Wongs as your destination for tonight, make sure you come dressed correct, because the door is going to be very selective tonight.
Girls Night Out
Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street): Any females out there looking to really “get it in” tonight need not look any farther than Webster Hall, where the city’s largest Girls Night Out is going down yet again. Webster Hall has been running this event on Thursdays for as long as I’ve been in New York City and they have yet to fail me once. Ladies are free all night, and guys pay $25 at the door. However, you can buy advance tickets for just $15 by clicking here http://www.etix.com/ticket/online/performanceSearch.jsp?performance_id=1162387&cobrand=websterhall. Ladies, you will have no problem having a good time at Webster Hall tonight, and fellas, trust me when I say there’s no other place you would rather be.
Afterwork Martini Thursdays
Harlem Supper Club (454 W. 128th Street): The Harlem Supper Club is doing its thing once again this Thursday, offering some of best drink specials New York City has to offer on Thursday nights. Starting at 6pm and ending at 9, you can get 2 for 1 mixed drinks, 2 for 1 martinis and $4 Coronas. They even have some decent bottle specials that won’t kill your bank during these recessionary times, including a 2 for $300 special on bottles of Grey Goose all night long. Best of all, there is no cover, so strap on those snow boots and get your behind uptown, where Black Oak Nights is sure to be in the building.
Wine & Chocolate Tasting
Hudson Terrace (621 W. 46th Street): If you’re looking for a little Pre-Valentine’s Day celebration, why not head over to Hudson Terrace where you can indulge in a wine and chocolate tasting that is sure is sure to wet your palette for all of the fine dining you’re sure to encounter on Valentine’s Day. Hudson will have chocolate, champagne and select wines for you to pair tastes of all kinds from 7pm to 9pm tonight. In the background, you’ll have plenty of mingling music with hip-hop and Top 40 music as your select genre. And of course, dress is upscale, because we all know at wine and chocolate tasting just doesn’t befit the typical jeans and t-shirt look.
One World
Times Square Arts Center (669 8th Avenue): Who said Times Square was just for tourists? This evening, and every Thursday evening, promoter Junito & Friends is blowing out the Times Square Arts Center with one of the most upscale parties for young, black professionals in all of New York City. Dress is business casual, so you are definitely better off coming here straight from work. There are plenty of Times Square frequenters sure to be in the building, including much of the MTV and Viacom crowd that already works in the area. They’re serving food and drinks at happy hour prices from 5-7pm and there is a $10 cover for the fellas. Still, the crowd here is sure to be quite impressive and quite conversational, making this one of the friendliest events of the evening.
