Friday has come and gone, but Saturday is here to save the day. Let’s keep the weekend parting going with some of these events from the Saturday Nightlife Rundown for March 13, 2010.
Circus Saturdays – 10pm - Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street): In what is being called the “Best Party on Earth,” Webster hall is bringing the circus to New York City this Saturday. With trapeze artists and fire breathers on the premises, Webster Hall promises to be one of the craziest venues on the docket this Saturday. Trust me, this isn’t your usual party, but it will help take you out of your usual routine. As per usual, all of Webster Hall’s 6 dance floors will be in action this Saturday, with 5 DJs giving you your choice of music throughout the night. Admission is free until 12am. And while there won’t be any circus elephants on the premises, I promise there will be a stampede of people at the door, so get here early!
Socialite Saturdays – 10pm
D’Or (204 West 55th Street): D’Or continues to keep it sexy every Saturday night with their Socialite Saturday party. Ladies are free before 11pm and gentlemen are too; just say you’re on the Clubplanet guestlist. The dress code is trendy and sexy, and it is being enforced. As for the crowd, the theme of the night is all you need to know. Socialites galore will be out in full force with regular New York City partygoers filling up D’Or like the cream in a Twinkie. There are plenty of bottle specials for the ballers in the house, including 2 bottles for Grey Goose for $300. And if you’re celebrating a birthday, contact D’Or directly.
Big East Championship Game – 9pm
Madison Square Garden: Get your night started off right with a little basketball! No. Don’t worry; it’s not the New York Knicks. Instead, take in some high-quality, intense Men’s College Basketball as the Big East Conference crowns its tournament champion on Saturday. The two best teams in the conference will square off for a guaranteed spot in this year’s NCAA Tournament, as well as a boost in their overall seed for the tourney. Come experience the thrill and passion of March Madness at the Garden, drink some beers, get some food in you, and then head out for the rest of the night.
The Scottsboro Boys (Musical) – 3pm & 8pm
Vineyard Theatre (108 East 15th Street): “The Scottsboro Boys” is getting pretty good reviews, including the following one from the New York Times:
With “Scottsboro” it is as if the events on which it is based are still too raw and upsetting to be treated with too much panache. Though it features some high-kicking dancing from its personable and industrious ensemble, this production gives the impression of always treading carefully, with furrowed brow, stooped shoulders and an accusatory glare.
The evening begins with a hopeful jolt of vivacity, as cast members swarm the aisles with fast-talking promises of the entertainment in store for us. “Tonight’s a night of merriment/ Of laughter, songs, and jokes,” says the Interlocutor (an excellent John Cullum), who, as the show’s sole white performer, functions as an uncomprehending master of ceremonies. – NYTimes.com
It’s a great musical about a very serious historical event from the 1930’s. Tickets are quite expensive (around $70), but it’s worth it if you ask me, and it’s certainly one of the few times you’ll be able to see a predominantly black cast in New York City. Get tickets at vineyardtheatre.org.
I Love the 80’s & 90’s Party – 9pm
CRT (108 West 40th Street): The name speaks for itself, so how can you not want to be here? DJ Spin will play all of your favorite music from the two decades that seem so long ago now. It will be a fairly diverse crowd, but when you’re experiencing nostalgia, who really cares? It’s a ticketed event, and you can go to davidshapiro.net for tickets and more information.
Encore – 10pm
Roam (5 East 19th Street): ThreeKings is bringing back its Encore party for the third time now, and it promises to be better than ever. There is an open bar from 10pm to 11pm, so you don’t show up late! Best of all, you don’t need to come out of pocket to take advantage of the open bar, because everyone is free before 11pm with RSVP (http://www.threekingsnyc.com/rsvpfull.php?eventid=145). As with any ThreeKings party, you can bet that the music will be off the chain, so there won’t be any 30-minute Salsa breaks to break up the urban feel. The dress code is going to be enforced, so be upscale and sophisticated. Other than that, enjoy the night!
Sweet Saturdays – 5pm
Honey (234 West 14th Street): I heard this weekly event at Honey is doing alright, so I thought I would show it some love for yet another week. The party is free all night, and the happy hour specials make it seem like they’re practically giving the stuff away. The party doesn’t really turn into a party until 10pm or 11pm at night, but don’t let that stop you from coming at 5 and enjoying one of the few Saturday happy hours in the city. For just $5, you can get cocktails, draft beers or wine up until 9pm. This makes Honey the perfect destination for young, black professionals looking for a spot to pre-game and get your buzz on before you go out for the real fun. Honey also has a pretty decent menu working for them, so don’t be afraid to try out the quality, but overpriced, appetizers they have to offer.
