Black Nightlife, Events, Parties & People in New York City

Tuesday Rundown: April 13, 2010

Posted by Black Oak On April - 13 - 2010

London Lennies, Queens

I hope your Monday was as celebrated as ours. If not, make sure you catch up with everyone else by enjoying a night out tonight. We have our restaurant of the day, a little musical performance and a poetry reading.

The Daily Show – 5:45pm
NEP Studio 52
(733 11th Avenue): If you watch The Daily Show, then you won’t want to miss tonight’s episode. Rachel Maddow will be live and on set for this evening’s recording, which could get a little testy tonight. It will be interesting to see if John Stewart goes after her on all the things he has said about her show/network in the past or if he’ll play democratic-ball and have an easy going conversation. What better way to find out than to go there and see it live. TheDailyShow.com

Luxurious Tuesdays – 5pm
Negril Village
(70 West 3rd Street): Keeping it simple, as they do each and every Tuesday, Negril Village is letting you in for free, providing you with great Caribbean food and is offering $7 rum punch along with many other drink specials. Young, black professionals tend to fill this place up with regularity, as they enjoy the hip-hop, R&B and reggae music that oozes out of this restaurant/bar well into the night. So whether you’re looking for a good time or just want to enjoy some of New York City’s best Caribbean food, Negril Village is where you want to be this Tuesday night after work.

Taj Tuesdays – 5pm
Taj
(48 West 21st Street): The afterwork party keeps rolling at Taj this week, as professionals from all walks of life embark upon Taj’s sexy and cool establishment this evening. Everyone is free up until 7pm, and the drinks are 2-for-1 until that very same time. Once again, this is an extremely professional, yet sexy crowd, so when it comes to clothing, you should have your best duds on if you plan on getting in without a hassle. Birthday parties are extremely welcomed, and large groups will get preference at the door.

“Lost” Watch Party – 8pm
Southern Hospitality
(1460 2nd Avenue): ABC’s “Lost” does not officially start until 9pm, but the watch party at Southern Hospitality starts way sooner than that! Get juiced up for the show by downing back $10 pitchers of beer, $6 frozen drinks and $3 Dharma shots. And of course, why not dine on some of the delicious, southern, barbeque specialties that Southern Hospitality serves up on the regular basis? I can already hear those Memphis-Style Dry Rubbed Spareribs calling my name!

Music & Soul – 9pm
Tillman’s
: If you are interested in a late night-cap this Tuesday, then Tillman’s is the place to be. As you know, this spot is buzzing with the social, black army 24/7, and tonight won’t be any different. However, Tuesdays, the chatter tends to die down (some) after 9pm, when the artists start going freestyle for the remainder of the night. From classical soul jams to afro-beat rhythms, Tillman’s gets it going on Tuesday nights with music sets you will not hear anywhere else in Manhattan. So even if you plan on going to Tillman’s Bar and Lounge for the wonderful soul food or the endless socializing, stick around for the music, and you’ll find yourself coming back for that next Tuesday night.

StorySlam – 7pm
Nuyorican
(236 East 3rd Street):

As seen in the New York Times! The Moth StorySLAM returns to the Nuyorican Poets Cafe on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7pm, starting April 13th. Doors open at 7, stories begin at 7:30. This month’s theme is “Dues.” Please Note: There are no advance ticket sales for this show. All sales are first come, first serve at the door. ~ From nuyorican.org.

Restaurant of the Day
Old Fashion Fish & Chips – 3pm to 6pm
London Lennies
(63-88 Woodhaven Blvd., Queens): London Lennies is celebrating its 50th year of existence by offering all takers fish and chip platters for just $1.50. Of course, not everyone is a fan of this classic dish, so they are also discounting lobster and scallop dishes by 20%. Don’t show up expecting your typical bar scene. This restaurant is great for large groups, has some of the best seafood in New York City and maintains a very classy clientele. With dishes that typically go for $20 or more, you’re getting one heck of deal on this seafood special.

Happy Hour Hangout – 5pm
Nirvana
(346 Lexington Avenue): Gentlemen, come on through, but this bud ain’t for you. Ladies can drink all they want from 5pm to 7pm as part of Nirvana’s sponsored bar. Fellas, you can come through for happy hour prices that last until 11pm. Nirvana will also serve complimentary appetizers tonight, so food is not an issue as this uniquely heavenly bar. RSVP at diningengagement@ayoo.com.
