Where did that warm weather go? Looks like it’s not coming back anytime soon. For the mean time, we’ll try to keep it indoors until the weatherman tells us otherwise. Oh well, this being New York City, there’s still plenty to do. We have afterwork parties, late night parties, charitable functions and even a night of old-fashioned entertainment. Get your Blackberry or iPhone out, because you might want to jot some of this down. Here is the Wednesday Nightlife Rundown for May 19, 2010.
Crazy, Sexy, Cool – 6pm
Slate (54 West 21st Street): Get off work as soon as you can and make your way over to Slate for the afterwork party of the week. Happy hour starts promptly at 6pm, when beers and drinks will flow from the bar like water out of a fire hydrant in Crooklyn on a hot summer day. They are even serving glasses of wine on the cheap to help the more sophisticated afterwork drinker indulge in the party as well. DJ Moma will do his best to keep your buzz going long after happy hour is over with a diverse collection of Top 40 music. And to keep things light, you do have the option of playing pool or ping-pong—you know, in case the liquor, dancing and beautiful people aren’t enough for you.
Fight Against AIDS – 7pm
H&M (505 Fifth Avenue): The H&M on Fifth Ave. is doing some very charitable work tonight as they promote the fight against AIDS. This evening, the store will open its doors to the public for a night of food, drinks and music. As you can bet, H&M will have a uniquely delectable spread for your pleasure. But don’t go there just to eat! After all, this is for a good cause! You will get 20% off your purchase and 25% of that will go to various youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects. So you get the best of both worlds at H&M tonight; discounted clothes and charitable giving! How’s that for a Wednesday night?
A Night of Poetry, Comedy & Storytelling – 7pm
Nuyorican (236 East 3rd Street): For an aesthetically pleasing night, Nuyorican is the only venue in New York City tonight! Performances you won’t find anywhere else will be on the stage at the Nuyorican tonight, when musicians, comedians and flat out, professional storytellers grab the mic to entertain you for entertainment’s sake. It should be a great time for everyone, and you leave with more “mental” stimulation than you will ever find at any nightclub.
Greenhouse Wednesdays – 11pm
Greenhouse (150 Varick Street): If you are looking for a uniquely New York experience, Greenhouse is probably your best bet tonight. Every late-night owl in New York City will make their way over to this trendy, “green” club, where the couches are made out of recyclable material and the lights are all LED. Of course, this isn’t the easiest place to get in. With a diverse group of sexy, young professionals flocking to Greenhouse like their birds going south for the winter, the club manages to maintain a rather “picky” door, so have your “A” game on and a few women in your party.
French Culture Night – 6:30pm
Empire Hotel (44 West 63rd Street): From JoonBug.com:
The warm air of May brings memories of Paris, and French Culture Nights brings you the next best thing. Join us for Paris Latin Night with jazz singer JESSICA MEDINA on Wednesday, May 19… Each monthly French Culture Nights features a mix of visual and performance arts, in a casual but elegant setting. Paris Latin Night will take place on the rooftop of the Empire Hotel, in the Columbus Circle area. A pleasing variety of talented artists & performers make this evening an enjoyable opportunity for French-speakers of all backgrounds to mingle, enjoy the arts, and have fun… The admission fee of $10 is waived for those who pre-register online with CODE “LOAN” at FrenchCultureNights.com.
Get Your Wine On
Silk Road Palace (447 Amsterdam Avenue): If you aren’t aware of the Upper West Side Chinese Wine Wars, you don’t know what you’re missing. While the wine that these Chinese Restaurants are serving isn’t of the highest quality, it’s free wine with food, and that’s something any wine junkie can appreciate. Silk Road Palace will give you a bottomless glass of wine with your meal, allowing you the opportunity to fill up on MSG and alcohol all in one sitting. Silk Road actually has some pretty good Chinese food, so while the wine isn’t the best, the food is actually worth it.
