The World Cup has started, the weather is great, and best of all, the weekend is finally here. If you plan on taking off for the weekend, more power to you. If you plan on staying in the city for the weekend, we have you covered. From trucks with food to movies on rooftops, Black Oak Nights has scoured the city for the most entertaining, and at times, culturally pleasing events going on for young, black professionals in New York City. So without further adieu, here is your Friday Nightlife Rundown for June 11, 2010.
ESPN World Cup Truck – 9am to 5pm
Columbus Circle: In case you have been living under a rock for the last six months, I am here to inform you that the World Cup starts today. It officially got under way with host nation South Africa vs. Mexico this morning, but the ESPN truck was up and going well before that. For breakfast, you can get American Silver-Dollar Pancakes, Mexican Huevos Rancheros and Spanish Tortilla Espanola. For lunch, Mexican Carne Asada Burritos, American Sliders, Bunny Chow, French Seared Rice Balls, Lamb Gyros and Japanese Yaki Mandoo Dumplings. With the weather being what it is today, what better way to spend a day in the sun than sitting at the waterfall Merchants Gates and watching a little bit of soccer?
Rooftop Films – 8pm
Open Road Rooftop (350 Grand Street): The New York premiere of Biker Fox is set to go down tonight, and you can thank Rooftop Films for inviting you to the party. Biker Fox is a documentary about a bicycle-riding philosopher from Tulsa who has all kinds of insights and perspectives that could make anyone second guess their meaning in life. Check it out!
Sushi Reggae? – 9pm
Natsumi Japanese Lounge (226 West 50th Street): Tow things that I have never put together in my mind before are Sushi and Reggae. Of course, only the wonderful people at Natsumi Japanese Lounge would come up with such a unique combination of art and food. What better way to enjoy some of New York City’s best and world class sushi than when listening to reggae music by Selectress Iriela and her reggae tunes? Some of the money from this event will go to Second World, an international nonprofit for educating young people through music.
Internet Week Kickball Tournament – 8pm
Chelsea Park (Tenth Avenue between 27th & 29th Streets): In case you were waiting for something really exciting to come out of Internet Week, I think I finally have what you’re looking for. Internet Startups from across New York City will meet up at Chelsea Park to help end Internet Week on an extremely high note. A kickball tournament to end all kick tournaments will determine which internet startup is in the best physical condition to take the world over! If you’re working for a small internet company, sign up by emailing kickball@imagespacemedia.com.
First Kiss Fridays – 10pm
Suzie Wong’s (547 West 27th Street): There won’t be too many other places getting their sexy on like Suzie Wong’s is tonight. With ladies free before midnight and fellas on the reduced tip, you can be assured that this place will be filled to brim this Friday. Young, black professionals will bring the week to a close at Suzie Wong’s, and the aid of DJ Will and DJ Johnny on the 1’s and 2’s, I don’t doubt that they will bring Suzie Wong’s to a close with them. So get out your Friday’s best, make your way over Suzie Wong’s, and party like it’s 1999 all over again.
Rooftop Party – 11pm
Empire Hotel (44 West 63rd Street): Your late-night groove has no business getting started without stopping by Empire Hotel’s rooftop first. It is going to be the perfect, cool, summer evening tonight, so why waste the entire thing by staying inside of some stuff bar and/or lounge all night long. At least take a few minutes to enjoy your favorite drink upon the top of the city as you take in the beautiful skyline view from New York City’s most happening rooftop. Everyone is free, the place will be teeming with sexy, young, black professionals and you won’t be able to beat Empire Hotel’s lineup of superstar, hip-hop DJs that are on slate to work the turntables this Friday night.
Indoor/Outdoor Party – 10pm
Hudson River Café (697 West 133rd Street): The Hudson River Café may be new to some of you, but for many a young, black professional this low-key place is no secret. If you’re looking for a nice place to chill, socialize, do a little dancing and chill some more, Hudson River Café may just be the place for you.
