When I was in my teens, I watched a lot of “Cheers” re-runs, and thus I always imagined going to a bar where everybody knew my name. Of course, living in New York City and finding a place like that in Manhattan makes that a little bit more difficult for a young, black professional. Naturally, there are plenty of spots for black people in Harlem, but many of those tend to cater to a much older crowd. But having been in New York for quite some time now, I have managed to comb through many a bar in Manhattan, and I have a few spots worthy of regular attendance.

Here is our list of the Best Bars for young, black professionals in New York City.

SOHA
Nectar Wine Bar – 2235 Frederick Douglass Boulevard
When it comes to a nice, serene, modern and friendly atmosphere, you really can’t beat this little spot in Soha. Located in the burgeoning section of Central Harlem, Nectar draws all sorts of people to its contemporary milieu; still, the predominant clientele is of a darker hue. However, this isn’t the place to get rowdy, belligerently drunk or have a loud, boisterous conversation. With its peaceful yet trendy environment, Nectar caters best to a fun, young couple or a small group of friends. Together, you can sample their cheeses, try a new wine or just sit back and enjoy partaking in the pleasures of being young, black and fabulous.

UPPER WEST SIDE
Sugar Bar – 254 West 72nd Street
At the Sugar Bar, you come for the drinks and you leave with a full belly. With specialty cocktails and a full menu that will make the most entrenched soul-food lover a new believer, Sugar Bar encompasses black, Caribbean and African culture like very few places in Manhattan. The Sugartinis will shockingly get you drink, and soul music will take advantage of your tipsy disposition. Seeing as how this place is kind of pricey, a slightly older clientele is to be expected, but numerous twenty-something buppies frequent this place during prime nightlife hours.

UPPER WEST SIDE
Shark Bar – 307 Amsterdam Avenue
Don’t underestimate the power of the shark to lure in loads of black people throughout the week. While Shark Bar tends to ward off some of the older patrons who remember the Shark Bar of yesteryear, the venue hasn’t declined to such a degree that young, black professionals have been scared away. The music is always great, and the drink concoctions never fail to disappoint. While the entrees and food service seem to have faded since Shark Bar’s heyday under Oprah Winfrey’s ownership, this is still a great place to bring friends, shoot the shit and enjoy being in the company of other black folks like yourself.

CHELSEA
Tillman’s Bar & Lounge – 165 West 26th Street
Tillman’s brings a touch of Harlem to the Fashion District, inviting area young, black professionals to the establishment, often during the afterwork party hours. Monday and Thursday nights are when you’re most likely to see a crowd of black people in the building, as Tillman’s offer open mics and live music on these days. If you come with a group of people, don’t be afraid to grab a table and try one of Tillman’s many specialty soul food entrees. Often it’s the Monte Cristo that gets the best reviews from the brothas and sistas we know.

SOHA
Moca Bar & Lounge – 2210 Frederick Douglass Boulevard
Moca is a surprising little watering hole in Central Harlem. Although rather mundane looking on the outside, inside, Moca is set up with a trendy and homey feel that is easy to enjoy. Moca has happy hours every day of the week, making this place a popular destination for young, black professionals in the area. Most nights, they have some kind of a drink-purchase minimum, so intend on coming and staying for a while just to get your money’s worth. If there’s something special on television, like a big game, a Presidential conference or another unilaterally, unfulfilling episode of Black in America, you can be sure it will be on the HDTV at Moca, where many a stimulating conversation fills the room up with a delightful chatter.

No more Monday Blues, and Hump Day is long gone. Thursday is here, which means it’s basically time to start your weekend. To get you off on the right foot, we have a few ideas you can skim over in our Thursday Nightlife Rundown for March 4, 2010.

Girl’s Night Out – 10pm
Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street): As the title suggests, ladies are free all night. Dudes, you get the infamous “reduced” tag yet again. As for the party itself, you can’t do much better on a Thursday night. For the ladies, the drink specials are off the chain, so you won’t have to break the bank to have a good time at both the club and the bar. As for the fellas, the price of admission may be somewhat costly, but you won’t find a better female to male ratio anywhere else in New York City.
Note: You may be able to avoid the likely $20+ cover charge by going here.

Intimate Sessions – 10pm
Hotel on Rivington (107 Rivington Street): DJ Finesse is in control of the 1’s and 2’s this Thursday, so you can expect nothing but the best in hip-hop, R&B and old school music all night long. As you can imagine, Hotel Rivington does things nice and classy; thus, you should be dressed accordingly. So make sure you’re in your double-take gear so that you do not have any problems at the door. Besides, you don’t want to feel like a fish out of water when you enter the grandiose LEVANTeast room at the Rivington. This place is absolutely gorgeous, and usually, the people who come there don’t fray far from that description. So do your best not to mess up the atmosphere!

Black Speed Dating – 7pm
People Lounge (163 Allen Street): If you think the market does not serve the needs of single, black professionals—think again! New York Minute Dating is doing their best to service the African American community with a speed dating session catered to people like you. This event will be held at People Lounge, a beautiful lounge and bar with the grandeur and trendiness befitting of a young, black, up-and-coming professional. The cost is $35. The organizer recommends women be between the ages of 21 and 35 and that men be between the ages of 23 and 38. For your $35 you get one free drink; it’s up to you to get 7 free digits. http://www.nyminutedating.com/events.aspx

Rooftop Opening
Kimberly Hotel Rooftop (145 East 50th Street): If you are looking for a new place to call your own, try out the recently opened rooftop at the Kimberly Hotel. Talk about unbelievable views, the rooftop at the Kimberly is certainly nothing to scoff at. The view of midtown Manhattan will take your breath away, as will the décor of the rooftop itself. The rooftop has a full service bar, which should take care of any cold weather issues that may concern you during the month of March. Of course, if alcohol isn’t enough to keep you warm, they have a controlled fire burning for your viewing and warming pleasure.

High Life Thursdays Afterwork – 6pm
Taj (48 W. 21st Street): Get your evening started early with a trip to Taj after work. There is a 2 for 1 happy hour from 6-8pm, but the door is tight so make sure clothes are too. There is also no cover if you get there before 8pm, so I suggest you make your way there right after work. Besides, you don’t want to have to wait in line for this one if the weather gets ugly as the weather forecasts have predicted.

Honey Afterwork Thursdays – 6pm
Honey Lounge (243 West 14th Street): I have given Honey a hard time, but they usually do afterwork parties right. They have a great atmosphere for chilling after work, having a few nice drinks, and chowing down on a nice selection of appetizers and entrees. This is a great spot to bring your co-workers if all you want is a place to sit and the ability to hear yourself think. Naturally, there is no cover, and you’ll only hear the music you want to hear all night long.

Our House Thursdays – 10pm
Marquee (289 10th Avenue): The famous and infamous Marquee Lounge continues to get your weekend started right with Mike Chach handling the music on the main floor of the club. Couple that great music with a fashion preview, and what you have is one of the more upscale parties of the week. Sure, the place will be a lot more diverse than just young, black professionals in the building, but it is sure to be entertaining, and I am told that the fashion preview is something no fashion aficionado would want to miss.

All over Twitter and Facebook, people were touting about how they dismissed the idea that snow was going to stop them from dining out, shopping and living it up in New York City. Don’t let the end of the weekend eliminate all of that enthusiasm. Keep the party going; especially after work. Here is your Monday Nightlife Rundown for March 1, 2010.

Wine, Wine & more Wine – Dinner Time – Columbia Cottage (1034 Amsterdam Avenue): Call me nostalgic, but just thinking about the Upper West Side’s Columbia Cottage makes me think about my old days at my Alma Mater. Columbia Cottage is the go-to spot for casual Chinese Food on the Upper West Side, and in my opinion, they have some of the best Chinese Food in all of New York City. So if you’re looking for General Tso’s chicken or Bean Curd with Fried Rice, this is the place for you. And talk about burying the lead; you get a free carafe of white wine when you dine-in and purchase an entrée. So bring friends, get loads of not-so-tasty white whine, and get drunk and merry this Monday Night.

New Flavor Monday’s – 10pm
Sapphire Lounge (249 Eldridge Street): If you are looking to get your groove on with some of New York’s most energetic young, black professionals, then you need to head over to Sapphire Lounge tonight. DJ Chuck will be on the 1’s and 2’s spinning nothing but hip-hop, R&B and old school 90’s music. There is a $10 cover charge and several drink specials. Dress code is enforced, but they’re not too strict, so your work clothes ought to do.

New York Knicks Viewing Party – 7pm
The Ainsworth (122 W. 26th St): The New York Knicks are traveling to Cleveland to face off against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. New York fans are hoping this is LeBron James’ last game against the Knicks and that he’s in the blue and orange this time next season. So come to The Ainsworth and get your last look at King James dunking on the Knicks. New York Knick alums are scheduled to show up, along with Knicks City dancers. There will be drink specials and prize giveaways. So hurry up, get out of work and come watch the Knicks at The Ainsworth.

Laid Off Mondays – Midnight
The Delancey (168 Delancey): If you have unfortunately lost your job, why not drink your worries away? At The Delancey, they will give you a free shot of Tequila with proof of unemployment. Sure, going all the way to the LES may not necessarily be the most fun thing to do during the winter season, but during these recessionary times, it’s hard to turn down a free shot of anything.

Good Eatin’ – All Night
1849 (183 Bleecker Street): Once again, I’m touting one of my favorite spots, the 1849 bar and grill. This place is just too good and too valuable not to bring it up about once a week. All night long, they’re offering $3 well drinks, 20-cent wings and cheap-cheap beer specials. I recommend going with wings, fries and your favorite cocktail. Bring friends, co-workers, enemies, and if any of those people overlap into more than one category, it’s all the better.

Unfortunately, the forecast calls for a return to snowy days on Tuesday, so you better get out while you can. Here’s the Monday Nightlife Rundown:

Bottles Up Monday – 10:30pm - Suzie Wong’s (27th Street btw 10th & 11th Avenues): DJ Will and DJ Snap will take you through an array of music that includes nothing but the best of hip-hop, reggae and R&B music. There’s no cover for the entire night, but do come dressed correct, because they are guaranteeing that the door is going to be incredibly strict…and when there’s no cover, I tend to believe that.

Bubby’s Catering Open House – 6pm – 9pm –
Bubby’s Brooklyn (1 Main Street, Brooklyn): If you live in Brooklyn, or are willing to travel anywhere for food, then you might want to check out Bubby’s Brooklyn, where you can sample all kinds of great food and drink for the mere price of $25. You can use this tasting to get ready for your next event, or you can just come out and pig-out on exquisite hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and wines, all the while chatting away with some of the most eclectic collection of New York City foodies you will ever see.

Salsa Mondays – 5pm
Taj (48 West 21st Street): I know most of you aren’t down for this seductive dance, but some of you are, and the rest of you need to give it a try anyway. Besides, living in New York City and partaking in the nightlife practically requires that you know how to Salsa. Trying to make it in this city without ever giving it a shot puts you at a loss.

Ladies Night – 11pm
Marquee (289 10th Avenue): Marquee isn’t the typical destination of young, black professionals, but this Monday, every woman will enjoy Ladies Night at Marquee. This elite venue is definitely going to be extremely strict with the door, so make sure you come dressed correct. Naturally, ladies are free, but you must RSVP by calling 347-772-6275. Groups of five ladies or more get complementary drinks, so make sure you bring your girlfriends with you. As for the fellas, don’t come without a lady on your arm or in your group.

Jazz Jam – 9pm
Nuyorican (236 East 3rd Street): I got such a great response from this past weekend’s event at the Nuyorican that I thought I’d show some weekday love to the Nuyorican as well. For $10 you can check out one heck of a jazz set from MONK, along with a freestyle jazz section following the show. The “Jazz Jam,” as they are calling it, will consists of surprise guests, so if you want something suspenseful and different this Monday, this is the place to be.

Saturday has arrived and it looks like it is going to be a beautiful day. Thankfully, there are plenty of things to do in the City today, including a fresh look at the Knicks and a Mardi Gras-themed party. So get out there and have a fun time today, because come Tuesday, snow is back in the forecast.

American Songbook: Leslie Uggams: “Uptown Downtown” – 10:30pm - Lincoln Center: Check out this inspiring presentation from Leslie Uggams, a Tony Award winning performer. She is a magnificent black voice with a stunning Broadway background, and her presence on the stage will captivate even the youngest of audiences.

New York Knicks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder – 7:30pm
Madison Square Garden: Come watch the newly realigned New York Knicks get their brains knocked in by Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder. Okay, so that’s not exactly the best promo for the New York Knicks, but at least if you show up, you might get to see Kevin Durant do something special on the court. That’s the great thing about the NBA; even when your team sucks, you still get to see 25-29 other superstars come to your arena every year.

Sexy Saturdays – 11pm
Retreat (27 West 17th Street): When it comes to clubbing and throwing parties in New York City there is a very simple rule to follow: K.I.S.S! Keep It Simple Stupid! Retreat is definitely doing that by offering no cover before midnight, a trendy dress code, and nothing but hip-hop, R&B and reggae music. After all that, what else do you need?

Socialite Saturdays – 10pm
D’Or (204 West 55th Street): D’Or, the popular midtown club, is going social this Saturday, and I’m not talking about Facebook and Twitter. Of course, there will be lots of interaction going on, especially since ladies are free until midnight on the Rob Diesel VIP list. And to help lubricate even more social interactivity, there is an open bar from 10pm to 11pm. So stuff your blackberries in your purse, and leave your tweetdecks alone for the night, because Socialite Saturday at D’Or is the only thing you need to stay in the loop this weekend.

Saturdays with Casbah – 11pm
Taj Mahal (1000 Boardwalk, Atlantic City, NJ): Fire up your ride or rent out a limo bus, either way, Atlantic City is the place to be this weekend. Thousands are set to embark upon Taj Mahal this Saturday as DJ Jordan Williams takes the club over with his renown mash-ups and mixes on the 1’s and 2’s. Do come dressed correct, because you don’t get into a Donald Trump building without looking edgy and sexy—hair pieces are optional.

Circus Saturdays – 10pm
Webster Hall (125 E. 11th Street): This isn’t your older sister’s Webster Hall anymore! The newly renovated Webster Hall is for the clowns now…literally. With circus performers taking over a portion of the night’s activities in the grand ballroom, you’re sure to see something you won’t find at any other venue on your average Saturday night. Of course, if you’re just in it for the music, the men, the women and the alcohol, the lower floor room will take you away from the madness and allow you party the way you’re accustomed to at Webster Hall—with another kind of reckless abandonment.

Mardi Gras Party – 10pm
Club Roam (5 East 19th Street): Get here early or else the long line will surely leave you standing out in the cold. You don’t want to stand out in the cold when you’re half naked in a Mardi Gras outfit wearing a mask. And yes, festive attire is very welcomed at this party, because that’s what you do at Mardi Gras, ain’t it? Ladies are free before 11pm. Gentlemen, sorry, but you’re going to have to probably put up $20 to see ladies in Mardi Gras attire.

Thursday, February 17, 2010: Can’t you smell the weekend? Most of you are starting your weekend tonight–whether you have to work tomorrow or not. If you fit into that category, there are plenty of late night parties and bars to get into tonight, including one heck of a party going on at Suzie Wongs. But I’ll start off with a familiar face from the early 2000’s. There weren’t a lot of funny people on the anti-rap MTV of my adolescence, but this guy below was one of the few MTV personalities that could keep my attention for more than five minutes.

Tom Green Headlines Comix – 7:30 PM
Comix (353 West 14th Street): Fans of Road Trip and the old, ill-watched, Tom Green Show, might want to take heed of what’s going on at Comix throughout the weekend. Starting tonight, Tom Green will be performing his latest stand-up routine at Comix. He’ll be on at 7:30 tonight and is doing just one set. However, he’s doing two shows a night on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Obviously, you still have to pay the two-drink minimum once you get inside, but that’s the price of comedy here in New York City.

Martini Afterwork – 6 PM
Harlem Supper Club (454 W. 128th Street): Once again, do not sleep on the Harlem Supper Club this Thursday! Their afterwork party is well worth the trip uptown. It’s also well-worth the price of admission, because it’s free if you say you’re with Nitelife Entertainment. So why is this famed afterwork party worth your time? From 6 to 9, you get 2 for 1 mixed drinks, 2 for 1 martinis, and $4 Coronas. They even have a margarita special! You will want to come dressed correct for this event; otherwise, you will stand out like a sore thumb.

Girls Night Out
Webster Hall (125 E. 11th Street): Don’t be fooled by the crowd outside the door, there’s still room for us at Webster Hall. And if the ladies don’t already know, there is no better Ladies Night in all of the New York City. Ladies get in free all night, get a complimentary drink and get to enjoy being the center of everyone’s attention at this massive celebration. Find the right room, and you will get your Thursday night dose of hip-hop, house and R&B music. Doors open at 10pm an don’t close until the wee hours of the morning, so get ready for a long, fun, female-dominated Thursday night celebration.

Ms. Independent Thursdays – 7 PM
Vue Lounge (370 4th Avenue, Brooklyn): Claim to be on the NightOut Entertainment guestlist and you will get into this distant, but trendy, ladies night 100% free. Sure, you have to travel to Brooklyn to enjoy this late evening party, but it will give you a chance to try something new and get a breather from Manhattan for a change. They will have $5 Vodka drinks, as well as 2 for 1 mixed drinks until midnight. The DJ is going to play a decent share of Latin music, but the great food at this establishment may make you want to Salsa anyway.

Marathons & Triathlons + Burgers & Beers – 7 PM to 9 PM
Pop Burger (14 East 58th Street): If you want to get in shape, enjoy a few burgers and do a little good for the world, then this event is for you. Alyssa Rashbaum is leading up a group of people who will train for a full marathon while leading the charge to raise funds for blood cancer research. To take part, you will help raise those funds, and in turn you will get all the free training, airfare and lodging you need to enter running events across the country. Just email Alyssa (alyssa.rashbaum@lls.org) for more information on this event.

Selfish Thursday – 11 PM
Suzie Wongs (547 W. 27th Street): I got good feedback on this event last week, so I thought I’d bring it back yet again. There’s nothing but Hip-hop, R&B and 90’s music at this venue, so that was a definite plus. They are enforcing a dress code, so sexy is a must—another plus. And both ladies and gentlemen get in free until midnight; so that’s at least three good things going on at Suzie Wongs. I didn’t even get to the Grey Goose Open Bar that goes from 11 to midnight, and Power 105.1’s Prince of New York will be on the 1’s and 2’s, so you know that not only will the music be off the chain, but the people in the building are sure to be of high-caliber, as well.

High Life Thursdays – 6 PM
Taj (48 W. 21st Street): This is the most costly afterwork event in the city, so I wasn’t sure I wanted to put it up this again week. But I got good feedback on it last week, so I will give it yet another chance. It’s free before 8; however, they are very slow and strict at the door. But for the $20 cover, you get free food, a “Super Happy Hour” from 6 to 8, and some of the best DJs there are. There will be a heavy dose of Soca, Reggeaton and Salsa, so if that’s not your thing, this probably isn’t the club for you tonight.

Today already looks as if it’s going to start off better than yesterday, so why not take advantage of it and celebrate a break (no matter how brief it is) from all of the snowfall? There’s plenty going on this evening and tonight; so without further adieu, here is the Nightlife Rundown for Wednesday, February 17, 2010.

X’s & O’s Afterwork Wednesdays – 6 PM - Rogue (64 East 1st Street): DJ Envy and DJ Dallas Green will be handling the 1’s and 2’s tonight at Rogue, making any trouble you have getting to the Lower East Side well worth the trip. You will hear nothing but hip-hop and R&B from these two DJs, providing you with the Top 40 music and all-time classics you deserve to hear after a long day at work. There will be drink and food specials all night long, but the dance floor gets so crunk on Wednesdays that I doubt you will want even consider taking the time to sit down and eat.

Kaotic Wednesdays – 6 PM
Kaotic (222 W. 23rd Street): One of Manhattan’s best afterwork parties is at Kaotic tonight, where the cover is nonexistent and so are the inhibitions. There is sure to be an electric atmosphere in the air at Kaotic, as young, black professionals from across the Tri-State area take advantage of a one-hour open bar from 6-7, as well as $5 vodka shots and $4 beers. There is also a complementary dinner buffet from 6-8, so don’t worry about grabbing that bite to eat before you get to Kaotic, because everything you need is already there!

Open Bar Wednesdays – 10 PM
Skinny (174 Orchard Street): Of course, 1 open bar on Hump Day just isn’t enough. And as long as there is going to be a second one, why not make it twice as long? Skinny is doing just that! So once you’re done with the dinner and open bar at Kaotic, head over to Skinny and take part in their two-hour open bar from 10 to midnight. Sure, it will cost you $20 to take part in this one, but for two hours flowing liquor, I’d say you’ve made out well, economically speaking. And if limitless amount of alcohol doesn’t entice you, then maybe the music can get your buzz going, because there will be nothing but Hip-hop, Reggae and Old School music on the 1’s and 2’s, so you don’t have to worry about losing your buzz to any music you don’t want to hear. Contact Drew at 917-689-4308 for more information on the party and the open bar.

Watch the Olympics on NBC – 8 PM
Brother Jimmy’s (416 8th Avenue): If you’re interested in watching the Olympics with your fellow Americans, then Brother Jimmy’s is probably your best bet. They are sure to be serving up plenty of Olympic coverage from anyone of NBC’s many channels. And so long as you’re getting winter sports served to you, why not order some of Brother Jimmy’s infamous rib-tibs and wings to go with all of the great Olympic sports action you will consume with your fellow Americans. And if you’re a Southern American, make sure you show them your Southern I.D., as that can get you a 25% discount off your order!

Mix & Mingle – 6 PM – 8 PM
Bryant Bark: If you’re more interested in some good food and good conversation than you are liquor, than this may be the spot for you tonight. At Bryant Park’s Southwest Porch, you can take part in some delightful conversation with fellow New Yorkers, as you stand outside (heat lamps provided) and snack on some of the best sandwiches and appetizers New York City has to offer. You can RSVP with whitney.eichinger@wnco.com.

New York Knicks – 7 PM
Madison Square Garden: Fresh off a beating from last night, the Knicks return from Chicago to face the Bulls in the second game of a home and home series. Hopefully, the home crowd will help the Knicks play a lot better than the played last night when they lost by 33 points and gave up 29 points to Derrick Rose. As usual, tickets are still available for tonight’s game at the New York Knicks website, and it won’t run you all that much to go either. And if you’re a big fan of Nate Robinson, Al Harrington or almost any other New York Knick, this may be your last chance to see some of your favorite Knicks players, because the trade deadline is Thursday afternoon.

Black History Film – 6 PM
Herbert Von King Park (670 Lafayette Avenue): If you’re interested in taking part in some black film, then this is the place for you. You can view some of our culture’s best in film at the Herbert Von King Cultural Arts Center all day today starting at noon and ending at 8pm tonight. This event is being put on by the city’s Parks Department, so naturally it is free of charge, making it well worth the trip to Brooklyn. You can contact brecfamilyfunseries@parks.nyc.gov.

Great Open Bar – 6 PM
Blackfinn (218 East 53rd Street): This one is for you East Siders who don’t want to go too far away from home. Even though Blackfinn isn’t our usual crowed, they do know how to get down afterwork. So if you’re looking for nothing but a good conversation (and a $20 open bar from 6pm to 8pm to boot) then Blackfinn is the place for you. Trust me!

Contacts & Cocktails for Health & Wellness Professionals – 6 PM
Underbar (201 Park Avenue, Under the W Hotel): This event is limited to people in the health and wellness industry. It will cost you $30 to get in, but it is an extremely great opportunity to meet other black professionals in the health & wellness fields and develop some new acquaintances and contacts while sipping on cocktails. The city-renowned Underbar is a very quaint space, with a lot of elegance and sexiness about it, so make sure you’re dressed correct. Health professional or not, your mint-colored scrubs aren’t allowed!

FASHION WEEK

iFashionNetwork.com Cocktail – 7:30 PM
Gold Bar (389 Broome Street): If you are interested in attending a premiere Fashion Week party, then iFashion’s party tonight should be on your agenda. With some of the most knowledgeable people in fashion, iFashionNetwork.com is one of the leading web portals for fashion industry information and news. So when their employees, friends, guests and designer subjects show up at Gold Bar tonight, make sure you’re there to get your ear on ground floor of fashion’s latest trends and news.

Fashion Frenzy – 10 PM
Le Souk Harem (510 LaGuardia Place): This is an invite-only event, but you may be able to get yourself in the door if you can successfully RSVP with lesoukharem@redhot-pr.com. Hey it’s worth a shot! Besides, this is going to be one of the best Fashion Week parties of the evening, and there is sure to be a ton of big names in the building. Already DJ Nesta B from MTV is going to be in charge of the turntables, so let the hype and over-inebriated celebration of Fashion Week begin!

Hopefully, you’re taking advantage of it already. However, if you need some tips and ideas on where to go later on tonight, here are a couple of weekly Monday night events that should help cap what I hope has already been an entertaining three-day weekend.

Messy Mondays – 9 PM – Harlem Supper Club (454 W. 128th Street): Once again, the Harlem Supper Club is getting messy on Mondays and is offering free entry to any and all young professionals. Last week, I was told it got pretty rowdy at the old Supper Club. Given that today is a day off for many of you, I’m sure this evening won’t be any less entertaining.

The Love Hangover, featuring Rick Moody & Tracy Bonham
Union Hall (702 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY): From the website:

On this evening every year, the world-weary and the true believers
alike huddle in pairs, playing songs to heal broken hearts
and break whole ones. Local luminaries of the music scene
come two by two and each duo performs love songs
to hold forth on love in all of its many guises: the joy,
the pain, the humor, the frustration, the ecstasy, the agony,
the list goes on and on, just like love.

Go to their website for tickets.

Marc Jacobs Fashion Show – 8 PM
Bryant Park: This is by invite only, but if you are not lucky enough to have a ticket or a press-pass to this event, then you can view the show live show via webstream at Marc Jacobs’s website (marcjacobs.com).

“A Behanding in Spokane” (Play) – 8 PM
The Schoenfeld Theatre (236 W. 45th Street): This is a preview event of Martin McDonagh’s first play set in America. Christopher Walken stars as Carmichael and Anthony Mackie and Zoe Kazan are also among the cast. The story covers a “rollercoaster of love, hate, desperation and hope” as Carmichael searches for his long, lost left-hand. Sounds funny. Check it out here.

Bottles Up Monday
Suzie Wong’s (27th Street Btw 10th & 11th Ave): DJ Will and DJ Snap will be on the 1’s and 2’s spinning nothing but hip hop and R&B. To join the fun at absolutely no cost, join the guest list by emailing bottlesup@gmail.com. There is an open bar from 11 to midnight, so take advantage of your day off and get there early.

Salsa Mondays
Taj Lounge (48 21st Street): I know most people on the Black Oak Nights list are not too fond of seeing the club turn into an all-salsa affair for 30 minutes at a time; however, many of you don’t mind knowingly putting yourself in the midst of the sexy, Latin dance that is salsa. Well, Taj has an all salsa event each and every Monday, and it is a whole lot of fun. I recommend that any New Yorker that still doesn’t know how to salsa check this out, because this is a good opportunity for young, black professionals to learn this seductive dance.

Good Eating: All You Can Eat Ribs & Wings
Brother Jimmy’s (UWS Location): You know I like to throw out a “Good Eating” locale at least once a week. Brother Jimmy’s is probably one of the better spots to check out tonight, because it’s always popping and the food is great. Best of all, every Monday they have an all-you-can-eat wings & rib-tibs special that just can’t be beat. You can drink all of the beer you want to, as well, so take advantage of this on your day off of work!
