Dessert in New York City…Anyone?

Posted by Black Oak On September - 17 - 2007

Black Oak Nights scoured the city, people and Internet to try and give you best places in New York to try some dessert. We could give you society’s popular choices like Serendipity’s in Midtown East, or Junior’s Cheesecake in Brooklyn, but we thought we could do better than that. Expect some different choices here, and believe me, they are worth every pound you’ll gain!

Once Upon a Tart

135 Sullivan Street, New York, NY

This wonderful sidewalk café serves some of the best tarts in the city. You can get the desserts in varying sizes. So if you’re just going there after a big meal, you can order something just big enough to top of your taste buds. And if you’re going there because you’re ready to experience dessert delight, they have Mecca of tarts for you to devour as well. They also have a lot of creative selections for you that include every ingredient under the sun, including fruit, nuts, chocolate, vegetables and anything else they have in the kitchen. Located in Soho, it is a fun spot for passerbies to stop and have a couple of tarts, talk, socialize and close out the night with a hot drink or pumpkin cranberry biscotti. It will remind you of one of those popular coffee shops, only every body is getting high off sugar instead of caffeine.

Magnolia Bakery

401 Bleecker Street, New York, NY 10014-2452

Don’t come here if you are easily impressionable, because the food is extremely addictive! So sugar-fanatics beware. And anyone who is still on the South Beach Diet, stay away. With that said, come here and try out the red velvet cupcakes. It’s some of the moistest cake you will ever try, and they load it up with so much sugary icing you will be looking for a glass of milk faster than an Arthur Burr commercial. But despite the seemingly overdoing it on the icing and sugar, believe me, they come out tasting just right, and you’ll find yourself wanting more right after your first cupcake. The cupcakes are built perfectly firm, don’t crumble and yet melt in your mouth like an M&M. Their cakes are also just as delicious, with their German Chocolate cake and Cherries Jubilee cheesecake leading the way.

Café Lalo

201 W. 83rd Street, New York, NY

Yes, this is the place from You’ve Got Mail. But it’s much more than that! They offer over 100 cakes, tarts and freshly made pies. They also have 28 different types of cheesecakes. Now it is a crowded place, with not so good service, so get your food to go. But it is worth getting the carry-out, because the Belgium waffles, fresh whipped cream, Chocolate & Espresso Mousse, Zabaglione (a velvety-rich dessert made with Marsala wine and fruit) and Chocolate Trip Walnut-Truffle Cake aren’t just worth it…they’re to die for!
