New York City, what up? The weather hasn’t been all that great over the past couple of days, but Thursday is supposed to come through for us. Let’s hope it does, because there is plenty on tap for tonight’s black nightlife agenda. Here is your Thursday Night Rundown for August 19th, 2010.

Thursday Afterwork Party – 6pm
Honey (243 West 14th Street): The beautiful venue that is Honey Lounge opens its doors to yet another Thursday afterwork party. And Honey certainly knows how to take care of people afterwork. With tasty special drinks, no cover admission, sexy, young, black professionals and DJ Korrek working the hip-hop and r&b music, Honey manages to put the “ill” in chill on Thursdays. So if you’re looking to get together with a big group of friends, want to hit on a member of the opposite sex, or just need a place to relax with that significant other of yours, Honey is a good place to get your Thursday night started—and you can end it here too!

Young, Black Professionals Afterwork Dancing – 5pm
Tribeca (22 Warren Street): The dress code is chic but the atmosphere is wild and crazy, as scores of young, black professionals hit up Tribeca to do the damn thing on the dance floor tonight! If you need to work up a sweat, get a little steam off, or just need a place to try the latest move from your new favorite music video, Tribeca is the place to do all of that. It just might be the reincarnation of the late, great “Soul Train” up in Tribeca tonight, as DJ LA hits the 1’s and 2’s with hip-hop and old school mashups that will have your feet tapping before you even show the doorman your I.D. So get those papers filed early today, and get your butt out of work on time, because the party at Tribeca waits for no one, and this just isn’t something you want to be late to.

Moth StorySLAM – 7pm
Housing Works Bookstore Café (126 Crosby Street): There aren’t many spots for people to sit down in at Housing Works, but this place gets packed in spite of that during its Moth StorySLAM. In this ever popular event, writers from the New York City area are challenged to write stories set on a common theme, in what amounts to a literary version of freestyle battling. The readings can get intense, funny, sad and adventurous, making this one of the most worthwhile events in New York that doesn’t involve drinking! Get to Housing Works early though, because like we said, there aren’t too many spots at this venue.

Fashion Fights Cancer – 6:30pm
Audi Forum (250 Park Avenue): There’s no denying the numbers, it is almost a guarantee that everybody in this country will be affected by cancer at some time or some point in their lives. It’s that wide spread, and the fight to cure it needs to be just as urgent. At Audi Forum tonight, you can purchase tickets to one heck of fashion show. Five unique, trendy and talked-about designers will have their clothes on display and as a part of the “Sample Sale” that follows. You can check out the designers and their work at fashionfightscancer.org, where you can also purchase tickets that go towards the fight against cancer.

Beach Thursdays – 6pm
Water Taxi Beach (2nd Street and Borden Avenue, Long Island City, Queens): Who says you can’t party at the beach in New York City? We have our very own beach over at Long Island City! Okay, sure, it’s artificial, but who the hell can tell the difference between organic and displaced sand anyway? Water Taxi Beach is a great place to get your party on outdoors and with tons of young, New York City professionals. Don’t be afraid to show off that body you’ve been fine-tuning all summer long, and if you’re feeling a big reserved, there’s always a good game of volleyball going on. Weather permitting, this place is going to be popping this Thursday evening, so roll through and check it out tonight!

And I’m not just talking about the slew of NYC nightclubs, but we are diving into gymnasiums and even the floor of the New York Stock Exchange! Here is your Thursday Nightlife Rundown for August 5, 2010.

HD Thursdays – 11pm
Amnesia (609 West 29th Street): Get your party on HD style, because during these times of recession, why wouldn’t your nightlife exploits be highly defined? Thursday night at Amnesia, the young, black professionals of New York City will certainly put your definition of partying in perspective, as plenty of beautiful, powerful African Americans take to the dance floor like it’s the end of the workweek! Don’t even bother trying to tell folks they have to go to work tomorrow—hell, they don’t even want to heart that you have to go to work! Given the $20 cover charge, you won’t exactly want to bail out of here early either. Besides, DJ Self will play enough hip-hop and R&B music to keep you in the mood, and given Amnesia’s propensity to attract the finest New York City has to offer, you never know who might show up.

Crunch Gym 21st Anniversary – 8pm
Crunch Gym (404 Lafayette Street): Who knew that Crunch has been around since the first Bush administration? From local start-up to national franchise, Crunch Gym is at the top of the fitness training game, and New Yorkers undoubtedly have taken to Crunch’s bohemian-like approach to getting our asses in shape. In the Crunch spirit, they won’t even stop working you out to celebrate their own success. A DJ will be brought into the Lafayette location so that you can dance those calories you’re consuming as you drink all of the free alcohol from their open bar. You do have to RSVP, and it is no guarantee they will accept your request, unless of course you are a member of this fine, fine, get-your-ass-in-shape establishment.

Big Ten Happy Hour – 6:30pm
Boat Basin (79 Street & Hudson River): I’m not sure how many of our readers hail from the Midwest, nevermind the few of you that actually attended a Big Ten school, but I’m sure there are at least one or two of you out there. And if you are a Big Ten alum, then this is where you want to spend your Thursday night partying. Fellow Big Ten alumni are gathering at the Boat Basin to toast to the upcoming football season. Of course, I don’t understand why anybody outside of Ohio State alumni would be interested in talking about the upcoming college football season, but I suppose some people just like self-inflicted pain. Happy hour prices will last until 8pm, the party will last until 10, and the fact that you actually went to a Big Ten school will live with you forever.

Rooftop Party – 10pm
HighBar (251 West 48th Street): I know the day started off with quite a bit of rain, but can’t we hope for a little reprieve tonight? Assuming all goes well, there will be a fabulous rooftop party at Highbar, and every sexy, New York City individual will be there for it! This is an extremely “classy” event, so do come dressed in your best nightlife attire. The mix of people will be as diverse as the bar is high, so this is a good chance to expand your horizon’s beyond the ever-so-powerful black community. If you do head over to HighBar, make sure you mention that Black Oak Nights sent you and that you are on the Victoria guest list.

Empire Rooftop Afterwork Party – 6pm
Empire Hotel Rooftop (44 West 63rd Street): Of course, if you can’t wait until tonight to get your sky-high party on, then you can head over to the rooftop party Empire Hotel, where plenty of young, professionals are sure to be in attendance, just as there always are each and every Thursday at Empire. Tonight, if you mention that you are on the “Red Hot List,” you will be entered into a contest to win a free drink. I am sure that you are scoffing at such a notion, given that one drink certainly isn’t worth the time and effort it takes to cut out of work and get to Empire by 6pm. So in the interest of sticking it to them, just tell them Black Oak Nights sent you.

Autism Speaks to Young Professionals – 7pm
Floor of New York Stock Exchange (2 Broad Street): Last but not least is a charity event hosted by Autism Speaks. The wonderful organization providing help and assistance to so many children out there wants to educate the next generation of mothers and fathers that will have to operate in a society in which 1 out of 110 children are born with autism. So for all of you care, and are of drinking age, head over to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and have a drink or two in the name of helping those with autism. You will need a ticket, which of course you can buy here…

The weekend started so early for us that we weren’t able to get the post out on time today. Thus, we have to cater to our late night crowd tonight and give you all some of the best things under the moon this Thursday night. Here is your Black Oak Nights Thursday Rundown for July 29, 2010.

Late Night Eats
Chirping Chicken (355 Amsterdam Avenue): If you’re out late on the Upper West Side and you’re looking for a tasty, late-night meal, the Chirping Chicken may be the best spot for you. Beyond its great service and favorable atmosphere, the Chirping Chicken has great food—most notably their chicken! The chicken sandwich is great, their broiled chicken is even better, and the souvlaki chicken is beyond words. Of course, they have more than chicken, including Baby Back Ribs and some a nice little fish platter. But definitely come here for the chicken, and let this be your go to stop for mid-night dining—if not even later in the night.

HD Thursdays – 11pm
Amnesia (609 West 29th Street): For one of the best times of your New York City, mid-week existence, come through to Amnesia tonight, where the party doesn’t stop until six in the morning! That’s right, folks are getting down at Amnesia tonight and it won’t even try to be kosher. That’s not to say that this won’t be a swanky and trendy affair, but it will be anything but your typical Thursday night party. Young, black professionals that have to go to work in the morning, might want to rethink coming to this one. Then again, young, black professionals that are sick and tired of having to go to work in the morning—well, you mine as well come through anyway, because you will kick yourself for not going when you get the post-party wrap. I’ve barely given any details about this shindig, so I will just say this: ladies are free, hip-hop all night, and beautiful people everywhere!

Questlove – 10:30pm
Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Avenue): Yeah, I spelled Questlove’s name with a “Q.” Hell, he’s lucky I’m even calling him Questlove, because his momma sure as hell doesn’t call him that (Ahmir!). Anyway, “Quest,” or Ahmir, or whatever he’s calling himself will be at Brooklyn Bowl, which is apparently the place to be if you are a famous, or semi-famous, black person looking for a little anonymity and/or peace and quiet in New York City. Then again, “Quest” will be in charge of the hip-hop 1′s and 2′s tonight, so he’ll be in charge of the very loud noise that most celebrities try to avoid by coming here. Brooklyn Bowl has the feel and flare of a New York City nightclub, it just lacks the people. That’s okay though, plenty of young, black professionals make this their spot once or twice a week, as it’s a great place to have a drink and a conversation while people-watching at the same time. You can’t people watch at too many Brooklyn venues, so take advantage of this one—even if the person you’re watching for is “Questlove.”

Ladies Night Out – 10pm
Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street): If you don’t know “how to dougie,” get ready to learn tonight! Webster Hall will have Cali Swag District in the building, and they will light up the stage with what is sure to be their first and only hit song! Ladies get to take in the show for free, while the fellas will have to ante up $25 just to get in the door. Of course, I understand if the guys don’t feel obligated to pay over twenty bucks just to see a one-hit wonder rap group on the stage. However, Webster Hall will be packed with so many fine ladies tonight that the price of admission is going to be worth every penny. If you haven’t been to ladies night at Webster Hall before, you really don’t know what you’re missing. From tantalizing black females in tantalizing dresses, to outstanding DJs with outstanding music, Webster Hall is “numero uno” on Thursday nights. So why settle for anything less than the best on this unofficial start to the Black Oak Nights weekend?

Media Masquerade Cocktail Party – 8pm
Ella (9 Avenue A): You will feel as if you entered the 1920’s the second you step into Ella Lounge. Ella’s vintage setting, of course, is the perfect place for tonight’s event presented by Social Exposure Media. In line with their other events, such as The Pillow Fight and the Naked Painting Party, Social Media Exposure is now bringing a masquerade party to a nightclub near you! All media professionals are invited to come to Ella Lounge, where everyone will be dressed in business attire complete with your standard, workweek masque! There will be an open bar from 8pm to 9pm, and Ella will serve specialty drinks for the duration of the night. There is a $20 cover charge and Brian Christopher (a two first-names guy) will provide the music.

After Work Open Bar – 5pm
Bar 13 (35 East 13th Street): What better way to beat this New York City heatwave than with free drinks after work? If you are like most New Yorkers, you probably don’t have the best air conditioning system in the world, and you probably have a few hours to burn before your apartment cools down from whatever today’s ridiculously high temperature will be. Well, the folks at Bar 13 will help you cool off, and they’re not even charging for it! From 5 to 6pm, you can have an “ice” cold Margarita, or any other cocktail concoction, on the house! And from 6pm to 7pm, the drinks are all half price! So unless you plan on waiting out your sweltering apartment by loitering in a Starbucks, get your behind over to Bar 13 and try your luck on one, two, or maybe even 13 of their free drinks from 5-6pm.

Restaurant Week
Japonais (111 East 18th Street): Who says you have to pay top dollar to get some of the best tasting dishes from the Far East? During Restaurant Week (and you have just three days left), Japonais is serving up one of the most worthwhile meals in New York City. Before we get to the food, let me just tell you, Japonais has to be one of “the” places to be for young, black professionals. To my surprise, this place was a lot more diverse than I had ever expected. In fact, Japonais might even make the “Black Listed” Hall of Fame, if I hear anymore tales of the bar/waiting area being full of my beautiful, black people! As for the food, their Restaurant Week Prix Fixe is limiting, but quite delectable. Stay away from the Salmon dish, which is extremely good, but you could fit that piece of fish in your iPhone protector if you wanted to. I recommend the Japanese-style Ribs, which would seem like the last thing you wanted from a Japanese restaurant, but trust me when I say they put their own unique, and tasty, spin on the American-style rib, and you will love it!

Beach Thursdays – 6pm
Water Taxi Beach (2 Borden Avenue, Long Island City, Queens): This is our second Water Taxi Beach posting of the week, but believe me, the dual trips to Queens are well worth your time and money! Water Taxi Beach is just another great place to sit back and relax out in the sun. By 6 or 7pm, the killer heat should be well behind us, and hopefully the New York City climate won’t be as relenting. Besides, with the venue being alongside the water, the breeze is sure to be a welcomed side effect of being at this venue. While you’re here, why not throw back some summer food, such as the Coney Island dog or a hamburger or two. There will even be music (hip-hop, of course) for your dancing pleasure, so bring out your nightclub wear, or the beach equivalent, and get set for some fun in the sun at New York City’s only hip-hop party on the water!

The unofficial start to the Black Oak Nights weekend is here, and we are prime for one hell of a kick off. You certainly have your fair share of parties to choose from tonight, but since we have so many things on the agenda for the “actual” weekend, we’re sticking to a full-scale afterwork agenda for this Thursday. So skip the New York City nightclub, and hit up the Restaurant of the Day or a happening afterwork party…Okay, okay…We’ll throw one, little, teeny, weenie party in there for you. Here is the Black Oak Nights Rundown for Thursday July 15, 2010.

Restaurant of the Day
21 Club (21 West 52nd Street): You will have to get dressed up for this one, because a jacket and tie are a must at the infamous 21 Club. With food so finger-looking good that you will want to smack somebody the second your fork reaches your mouth, you won’t mind getting dolled up for this one. With dishes that include black truffles, pan-seared foie grass and all-famous “21” burger, this is a foodie’s gourmet dream. Thanks to restaurant week, you can eat for one low price, and their prix fixe menu is no joke.

Beach Thursdays – 6pm
Water Taxi Beach (2 Borden Avenue, Long Island City): It looks gloomy at the start of today, but it is supposed to warm up to the Nth degree before the day is over. So why not make do with the weather and head out to the beach, or at least New York City’s best version of it? Water Taxi Beach, sand and all, is throwing an outdoor party at its Long Island City location, and they want you to come through and enjoy it with them. Plenty of young people will flood the area, making this one hell of an evening party. So if you’re more of a burger and dog type of person and can do without Restaurant Week, then hit Water Taxi Beach up for a few choice summer foods and little outdoor partying.

Sexy Afterwork – 6pm
Tribeca (22 Warren Street): Afterwork never seemed so fun until the folks at Tribeca put their stamp on it. For the price of $0, you can chill out at Tribeca lounge with other young, black professionals in pursuit of the same thing as you: fun. With DJ Sugar Daddy on the 1’s and 2’s, Tribeca is sure to be on fire this evening and they will be going strong all night. So come out and dance to your favorite hip-hop, R&B and old school tunes and enjoy being grown and sexy for a change.

Lingerie & Lace – 6:15pm
Studio 353 (353 West 48th Street): Sorry fellas, but this event is aimed strictly at the ladies. If lingerie is something you get excited about, ladies, then this is the place to be as Lingerie & Lace teaches you a few things about lingerie that every woman should know. Included in this drinking, socializing extravaganza are bra fittings, hosiery tutorials, fabric showings and even a few games. This is supposed to be a fun and energetic class, so leave the workwomen’s mentality at the door, and enjoy a fun night about a fun topic.

Next Train NYC Launch Party – 11pm
CV (105 Rivington Street): Call me skeptical, but there is absolutely no way that this iPhone app, “Next Train NYC,” can accurately predict when the next subway train is coming. Sure, it can tell me when the next train is supposed to come or when it should have been there, but I don’t think the MTA itself knows when those damn subways trains are going to arrive; otherwise, how do you explain two trains running within 30 seconds of each other on the middle of a Saturday? So even though I think this app is bound to be a money-draining waste of time, the party they’re throwing for it this Thursday shouldn’t be. There will be a free open bar from 11pm to midnight, and all you have to do is RSVP at info@dlpmobile.com.

It looks like we will finally have a letdown in the weather and get out of this heat wave. Maybe it will rain, maybe it won’t. Either way, there is plenty for you to do this evening, and we have it covered in the Thursday Nightlife Rundown for July 8, 2010.

Girls Night Out – 10pm
Webster Hall (125 East 11th Street): It’s Girls Night Out at Webster Hall tonight, which means this mega nightclub is tricking it out for all of the fine ladies of New York City. Young, black professionals across the city will come through for this weekly event that always manages to take it to another level each and every Thursday. With hip-hop music booming out of the basic and Top 40 music dominating the dance floor, this place manages to keep everyone happy despite being one of the most diverse clubs in the city. So come through ladies and take advantage of the free admission. Guys, come through and take advantage of the lovely ladies. Have fun!

Washington Square Music Festival – 8pm
Washington Square Park – Get off of work, get outside and get into the mood with some free jazz music at the famous Washington Square Park. Tonight’s collection of musicians taking the stage at the park is full of newcomers with visions of grandeur. So you very well could come through and have the next Duke Ellington performing right before your eyes. Then again, you might not.

Rooftop Films – 8pm
Brooklyn Tech High School Rooftop (29 Fort Greene Place, Brooklyn): “Nyarma” and “Polar Explorer.” Those are the names of tonight’s film. While it has been hotter than Hell as of late, the cool New York Nights have been somewhat of a reprieve. So buy some food, bring some drank, and chill under the New York City skyline as you enjoy independent film at its finest. From Rooftopfilms.com:

Nyarma: Having screened Edgar Bartenev’s short film Yaptic Hasse at Rooftop in 2008, we are thrilled to welcome him back with this fabulous follow-up film. Once again documenting a family of nomadic Nenets who live in the Siberian tundra, Bartenev’s grand cinematography immerses us in the gorgeous and harsh scenery, while the intimacy of his familial inspection introduces us to the minute details of their remote life.

The Nenets make their home on high plains that are covered with a rugged dark soil, surrounded by steep hills and rocky peaks that disappear into the clouds, capped by a low-hanging sky. It’s an otherworldly landscape that implicitly imparts a deep and intractable isolation. They travel hundreds of miles around the region, amazingly capturing enormous wild reindeer, feeding them by hand, taming them into work, utilizing their milk, meat and fur for themselves and as sellable commodities. They move across the tundra on handmade “nyarma,” reindeer-pulled wooden sleds, living off the land as their people have done for centuries, seemingly untouched by modernity.

But even their isolated lives are changing in the modern world. Railroads and highways are shrinking their grazing grounds. Federal regulations limit how many deer they can herd. 24-year-old family head Gosha Nogo struggles to keep fellow men around the community, a necessity given the need for mutual aid in this harsh realm. An outstandingly-crafted documentary, Nyarma quietly and passionately tells a story that mixes the ethereal feelings of a unique way of life with the gritty facts of survival. – Rooftopfilms.com

Thursday Night Roof Party – 6pm
Empire Hotel (44 West 63rd Street): From GuestofaGuest.com:

Erik & Gordon Von Broock with Red Hot Group invite you to join us at the Empire Hotel Rootfop for afterwork cocktails until the stars come out. Over 5,000 Square Feet of open air viewing. Summer cocktails and dancing under the stars. You must rsvp to: EmpireRoof@redhot-pr.com You must specify you are on the Red Hot List.
It’s Thursday, which means it is the unofficial start to the Black Oak Nights weekend! Then again, for some of you, the weekend does start tonight, because for whatever reason, the government has dubbed Friday a holiday. While I’m all for capitalism and the never-ending work-life struggle, I’ll never be the one to look a gift-horse in the mouth. So let’s get this 3-day weekend (and in some cases four) off to a good start with the Thursday Nightlife Black Oak Nights Rundown for July 1, 2010.

Lusty – 10pm
Element (225 East Houston Street): Does anyone know why New Yorkers still pronounce “Houston” as “HOW—stin?” That’s crazy talk. The word is “HOO-stin”, not “HOW-stin. Get it right! Anyway, tonight on “HOO-stin” street, Element is going hard and gong live with several Hip-hop and Caribbean DJs that will get your long weekend off on the good foot. DJ Boof, DJ Envy and DJ King Crown will be on the turntables, working all kinds of music for your listening pleasure. Ladies are free all night while the fellas get dubbed with the dubious “reduced” tag after midnight (so get there early)! It’s going to be a hell of night, full of fun, flare and flirting. Don’t miss out!

Restaurant of the Day
The Commodore (366 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn): Catching that L Train may be worth the perspiration you’re sure to endure while waiting deep underneath the streets of New York City for that silly little train to come your way. If you take the train to Havermeyer Street, you’ll find one of the most talked-about diners in New York City. The Commodore has a great menu full of stuff that should never be on the menu of someone with the slightest of cholesterol concerns. From fried chicken to coated catfish, they have all your deep fried favorites, and their burgers are extraordinary. This place doesn’t even open up until 4pm, so you know it’s a late-night staple for all the hippies out in Williamsburg. So if you find yourself making that walk of shame back from Brooklyn tonight, or if you just happen to be in the subway when the L Train comes through, check out The Commodore, a place with great food that is perfect for a group of friends looking to chill and relax.

Afterwork Thursdays – 6pm
Honey (243 West 14th Street): Let the good times roll at Honey Lounge this Thursday night. DJ Hud will work the 1’s and 2’s, providing hip-hop and R&B tracks for the duration of the night. For those of you who have been to Honey before, you already know the inner-joy you experience here while posting up in a booth, relaxing to music and throwing back a nice cold one in an atmosphere befitting of a young, black professional. The drinks are a little more than they should be, while the food is well worth the price. However, it’s the atmosphere you should come for, and it’s the atmosphere that will make you stay. So make the best of every Summer Thursday you have and enjoy a relaxing evening at Honey.

Fashion Party – 10pm
Hudson Terrace (621 West 46th Street): Get dressed up for this evening’s event at Hudson Terrace, where fashion is on display like internet ads on this website. This party will feature several fashion designers and outlets, coming back from their own fashion event. In case you aren’t aware, that means models, bottles and fancy clothes, all wrapped up into one event. There will be some major purveyors of fashion in the building, along with some major buyers of fashion as well. So if designers, labels and the fashionable elite are your thing, you won’t want to miss out on this one.

Thursday Night Rooftop Party – 6pm
Empire Hotel Rooftop (44 West 63rd Street): Empire Hotel is at it again, offering up their beautiful, rooftop views to its young professional clientele—yet again. Not that they don’t profit off of us, have a business plan based around it, and fund their 401(k) plans with our discretionary income, but still, the gesture is well appreciated. Hopefully, the weather stays nice, so that you can drink under the sun, network with other youngsters and enjoy being in the moment for once in a while. You do have to RSVP (EmpireRoof@redhot-pr.com) to go to this one, but that’s just a prerequisite for keeping the riffraff out.

Summer BBQ
Puma City (South Street Seaport): Puma Social Club is having their summer kick-off party, and free BBQ is more than enough reason to swing through. It’s an invite only affair, but guests will enjoy great drinks, great food and one hell of a crowd. Socialites, bankers and people with no real titles will be on the premises, making up a diverse crowd that anyone can feel comfortable in.

It is Thursday, which means it is the unofficial start to the New York City weekend here at Black Oak Nights. So get your mind right, your nice clothes on and your drinking budget under wraps, because Thursday night is a live one. Here is your Thursday Nightlife Rundown for June 24, 2010.

Girls Quest Cocktail Benefit
YPC (150 West 30th Street): Come support the Girls Quest foundation, which helps economically-disadvantaged, young ladies achieve their full potential. The event will have food, drinks, music and more for your entertainment. All the proceeds go to Girls Quest, which means every drink you buy will help a young lady achieve her goals. So why not get drunk for a good cause?

Restaurant of the Day
HB Burger (127 West 43rd Street): It’s 2010, and the burger is more than just beef. Now you can get your meat on a bun with more options than just the finely fried hide of a cow. How about a buffalo burger? Or does the tasty free-range bison burger get your attention? HB Burger offers those rare meats, along with the traditional bovine variation, for just a mere $8 a burger. You can get all the extras on your burger for a mere 50-cents more. And for their specialty burgers, which are no more than $17, you have your choice of gourmet renditions of the Kobe beef burger, the filet mignon sandwich and the Cajun crab cake burger. This place is so great that I could hit it up every day of the week.

NBA Draft Party – 8pm
Sapphire New York (333 East 60th Street): The NBA Draft is on Thursday, when we will likely see John Wall go to the Washington Wizards with the first pick in the NBA Draft. Well, you could watch the draft at home, or you could go to Sapphire, where a multitude of young, black professionals will watch the NBA Draft in style. Admission is $20, and the door is going to be extremely strict. After all, they have to protect the likely NBA’ers that will roll though as the night progresses. As for you New Jersey Nets fans who are wondering who your team will pick with the 3rd overall selection, I’m guessing Evan Turner—in case you wanted to know.

Guys Getaway – Noon
Southampton Inn (91 Hill Street): Don’t be fooled, the women can come too—“Guys Getaway” just happens to be the theme. Any lady that enjoys cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, cigars, Scotch and hotel room service will be more than welcome to come. This event is more a less an ode the 50’s lifestyle, which consisted heavily of extremely potent potables, infamous nicotine consumption and a trendy aptitude for stogies. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I’m sure some of you Wall Streeters can appreciate it—so enjoy.

Summer Rooftop Films – 8pm
Automotive High School Rooftop (50 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn): I went to the Rooftop Series screening on Saturday night, and it (Lovers of Hate) wasn’t exactly the best flick I have ever seen. In defense of our recommendation of it—well, there is no defense. I apologize. Hopefully, Thursday’s showing of “The Rural Life and Spirit” will be a lot better. Here’s Mark Elijah Rosenberg on the movie:

An adorable yodeling animal animation, a legendary buck-dancer documentary, a splendid story of spirits in the tropics, plus more magnificent movies from pastoral places.
For you city dwellers, sweltering away amidst the concrete and steel, Rooftop Films offers a summer respite–a lush lawn to lie on and a cinematic journey into the jungle. The films in this program offer a glimpse of the scenery where the grass is indeed greener. Places where you can see hundreds (and hundreds!) of birds in a single day…if you race around the clock to do it. Places where gooey tree pulp can offer sustenance…if you don’t mind the giant slug fights. Places where cowboys sing like crooners, grandpa dances up the dickens, and wild animals become unwelcome pets. These cute cartoons, fascinating fictions, and delightful documentaries prove that compared to urban existence the rural life might be a touch more casual, maybe a tad more calm, but it’s no less complex. – RooftopFilms.com

Marquee Thursdays -5pm
Marquee (289 Tenth Avenue): Let’s not play around with the facts, Marquee is one of New York City’s “marquee” clubs, but it’s not always the most happening spot in the minds of the black people that call New York City home. Here’s to a Thursday at Marquee that might be a little different. Yes, it will be a “diverse” affair, but fun for all those involved. DJ Abrupt will play nothing but hip-hop and R&B, so the music will be on your side, and the dress code will be so scandalously sexy, that any race can appreciate it. There will be 2-for-1 drinks from 5-7pm and $5 beers all evening long. When it comes to parties, Marquee knows what it’s doing, so why not give it a shot the second you get off work on Thursday evening.
