It’s Saturday night in New York City, and my fellow young, black professionals need something to do, a nightclub to go, and a place to eat! Well, we think we have you covered in this edition of the Saturday Nightlife Rundown for July 31, 2010.
Restaurant of the Day
Pinche Taqueria (333 Lafayette Street): In New York City, it’s never too late for brunch, so get your butt in some clothes and get out to chomp it up with your friends over at Pinche Taqueria. The food there is absolutely delicious as they are one of the few Mexican spots in Manhattan that are actually worth the time it takes to get there. This isn’t your typical brunch spot, as you can get your fill of peppers, tropical fruits and tasty sauces all in one meal! Their huevos rancheros special is less than $6 and comes complete with guacamole–and to drink, Corona’s are a mere $2.75 a piece. So if you’re down for some eggs and chili, or just want to fill up on Corona’s, holla at Pinche Taqueria every weekend for brunch.
Rooftop Films: “Disco and Atomic War” New York City Premiere
The Old American Factory (232 3rd Street, Brooklyn): The heat wave seems to have died down, which makes it the perfect time to get back outside. Tonight at the Old American Factory, get some “indie juice” up in you, with tonight’s premiere of “Disco and Atomic War.” It’s a documentary about—well, I’ll let rooftopfilms.com tell you what it’s about:
Filmmakers Jaak Kilmi and Kiur Aarma grew up in Talinn in the 80′s, and in Disco and Atomic War they make use of wonderfully playful but credible recreations to set their true personal coming of age story against the backdrop of the rapid collapse of the Soviet government in Estonia. As illicit television antennas sprung up in Northern Estonia, rumors about the attempted murder of J.R. Ewing spread by word of mouth to the rural south, and the nation of Estonia was as gripped by the saga as the USA had ever been. Teenagers went to their school dances and imitated the disco moves they saw on television, clothing and hairstyles began to change radically, and things would never be the same. The government controlled media scrambled to create western-style soap operas and disco-saturated television programming that vaguely reinforced communist values, but it was far too little, and much too late. The genie was out of the bottle, Estonians were now in the grip of American television, and they began to dream that one day, they too would spend their days working in skyscrapers and their nights drinking fine whiskey by the pool, alongside their robot car. – Dan Nuxoll
Club D’Or Saturday – 10pm
D’Or in the Dream Hotel (204 West 55th Street): Club D’Or continues to be one of the most happening spots of the summer and they want you to be a part of it tonight. In fact, just to get as many young, black professionals as they can in their nightclub, D’Or is hosting a free open bar from 10pm to 11pm for those of you that can get there early enough. Then again, it’s not all that free for the gentlemen who have to pay the “reduced” price, while ladies are free all the way until midnight. Once you get in thought, I hope you will arrive dressed correct; otherwise, you will be put to shame by the wealth of talent that is sure to be in the building. With DJ Precise on the 1’s and 2’s, there’s going to be plenty of hip-hop music to get this party jumping, but our latino brothers and sisters will also get their fill of salsa and meringue music, as well. So whether you come here for the alcohol, the people, the hip-hop or the salsa dancing, Club D’Or has you covered tonight, so why go anywhere else?
The Hottest Rooftop Party – 9pm
Empire Hotel Rooftop (44 West 63rd Street): Whoa, you better get dressed up for this one, because Empire is apparently turning folks away like investment banks turn away small businesses these days. Anything short of your Saturday night best will likely get you thrown out of the line, but maybe—just maybe—you will have enough time to go home, change and come back just in time to wait in line again. For those of you that come dressed correct the first time though, there will be plenty of young people in the building, and Empire Hotel always sets the atmosphere for friend and worthwhile banter. So if you’re looking for chill scene with a view, the place to be tonight is Empire Hotel’s rooftop.
Slick Rick at the Canal Room – 11pm
Canal Room (284 West Broadway): Who said Slick Rick was out the game? On the contrary, he is very much a part of it, and he’ll prove it to you at the Canal Room tonight. Actually, the likeliness of him doing some type of performance is in doubt, as this could be nothing more than a crash-grab appearance for the likely money-hungry legend of the hip-hop movement. Either way, you can be sure that if Slick Rick is in the building, the party will be popping. Ladies are free before midnight and fellas are reduced—the worthiness of seeing Slick Rick, well that’s up to you.
